Fair housing is more than a list of dos and don’ts, rights and penalties, and mandatory continuing education. As stewards of the right to own, use and transfer private property, fair housing protects our livelihood and business as REALTORS® and depends on a free, open market that embraces equal opportunity. Southeast Missouri REALTORS® fully support and adhere to the principles of the Fair Housing Act (Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968), as amended, which generally prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings, and in other housing-related transactions, based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status (including children under the age of 18 living with parents of legal custodians, pregnant women, and people securing custody of children under the age of 18), and handicap (disability).
In addition, Southeast Missouri REALTORS® also support and adhere to Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities in places of public accommodations and commercial facilities and The Equal Credit Opportunity Act, which makes discrimination unlawful with respect to any aspect of a credit application on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, age or because all or part of the applicant’s income derives from any public assistance program.

Consider watching this Implicit Bias Training video provided by the National Association of REALTORS®. This video offers strategies to override bias in order to convey respect, ensure fairness and improve business relationships.
In November 2020, NAR launched Fairhaven, a new fair housing simulation training for REALTORS® that uses the power of storytelling to help members identify, prevent, and address discriminatory practices in real estate. Inspired by real stories, this innovative online experience has agents work against the clock to sell homes in the fictional town of Fairhaven, while confronting discrimination in the homebuying process. Learners will also walk in the shoes of a homebuyer facing discrimination. The training provides customized feedback that learners can apply to daily business interactions.
Southeast Missouri REALTORS® takes pride in recognizing the commitment to professionalism that our members have made; in our newsletters we highlight those members who have completed the Fairhaven Simulation. Join these members and get recognized for your commitment to professionalism and commitment to Fairhousing by taking Fairhaven now!
